What the Heck Are You Building?

If it’s true that culture out performs strategy… what are you doing to create the right, best culture for your company?

The past couple of weeks I have been reviewing some fundamental leadership principles and I’ve come to the realization that I am not doing nearly enough to create the culture I want in my own, Grow Your Business Coaching.

Here are just some of my realizations to hopefully help you as you think about your company.

According to the Gallup Organization, the number one reason people leave their work (job, you know quit!) is the relationship (have one or not) with their direct supervisor. How are you treating the people around you be they actually a W-2 employee or an independent contractor?

Gallup says the results of the latest engagement index:

Engaged employees – 28 %
Not-engaged employees – 54%
Actively Disengaged – 17%

Another way to look at these results are 71% of the workforce is either under performing or actively undermining their work.

Here’s how the Engaged, Not-engaged and Actively Disengaged are defined by Gallup:

Engaged  – employees work with passion and feel a profound connection to their company. They drive innovation and move the organization forward.

Not-Engaged  – employees are essentially “checked out.” They are sleepwalking through their workday. They are putting in time, but not enough energy or passion into their work.

Actively Disengaged  – employees aren’t just unhappy at work; they’re busy acting out their unhappiness. Every day, these workers undermine what their engaged co-workers accomplish.

The Q-12 Survey has been taken by well over 1.5 million employees to get to these numbers. Whether you have employees or work with independent contractors the results will be the same. You are creating a culture. The question is, is it the culture you really want?

To your success!
