Appearance is the key factor in attracting others to you. Shallow? Maybe, but it’s true. The first impression anyone will ever make about you is based upon your appearance, and your appearance is determined in large by the type of clothing that you wear. Your clothing should give the impression both of who you are and who you want to be.
The most important part of using your appearance to create a positive first impression is to appear clean and neat. No one is attracted to a slob; a lack of attention to self is often indicative to a general apathy with regards to other people and life in general.
But that’s not all!
Appearance can be where and how you show up. Just the other evening some folks I know were taking “pot shots” at a particular business in an open forum in plain sight for all to see. I am not arguing the points made I am arguing that the entire conversation was held in an unprofessional manner. As the conversation unfolded in the public eye… an opinion of those expressing a particular point of view was being formed by onlookers, browsers, clients and prospects alike.
You see when you point your fingers at someone in an indicting way… remember that you have three fingers pointing right back at you.
Remember too, the Four Agreements
- Be Impeccable With Your Word
- Don’t Take Anything Personally
- Make No Assumptions
- Always Do Your Best
This should by no means be taken to mean that you have to spend a small fortune on a wardrobe or impression making… only that you need always be aware of how your comments, dress or demeanor would be perceived by onlookers. I am fortunate to be helping Celadon Trucking Services train their existing professional drivers to be better trainers for neophyte drivers. One of those guys, Lenny, said something really profound a few months back. He said, “When you argue with an idiot… the onlooker can’t tell which one is the idiot!”
There is never a second chance to make a first impression, and if that first impression is a negative one you are likely to have a great deal of difficulty in convincing the client or prospect to reconsider; therefore, the best thing you can do is make sure that you have taken all possible measures to ensure that you place your best foot forward when stepping into the visibility pool.
