4 Common Misconceptions Holding Back Growth

4 Common Misconceptions Holding Back Growth

What do you have to do to reach your highest potential? Are you living up to your potential? Do you have a dream inside of you that you’ve never pursued?

Unfortunately, a lot of people aren’t living up to their full potential. According to John Maxwell, “To reach your potential you must grow. And to grow, you must be highly intentional about it.” Sadly, many people aren’t intentional when it comes to taking the necessary steps toward growth.

Recently, I facilitated a mastermind based on John Maxwell’s book, 15 Invaluable Laws of Growth. One of the things the participants learned is, we often harbor one or more mistaken beliefs that create a “growth gap” in our ability to grow and reach our potential. Below are four common misconceptions that I believe may be keeping you from being intentional about your growth.

  1. Assumption and Knowledge Gaps

As a child, our bodies grow automatically. Therefore, people assume the growth they need will happen naturally, too.  But personal and professional growth doesn’t just automatically happen. That’s not how it works. You won’t grow in the areas you need to grow unless you’re intentional about it. You must make a plan to improve yourself. Decide how you want to grow. Choose what you’ll learn. Seek out opportunities to achieve your growth objectives. Follow through with your plan.

  1. Timing Gap

How many times do you hear yourself say, “It’s not the right time to begin.”? Unfortunately, a lot of us are guilty of this. We don’t act on things as quickly as we should – and that includes our growth. We wait … and wait … and wait … for the right time to appear. But the Law of Diminishing Intent says, “The longer you wait to do something you should do now, the greater the odds that you will never actually do it.” Therefore, you need to start growing now. Even if you’re taking little steps toward your growth, you’re still moving forward.

  1. Inspiration Gap

When I coach people toward achieving their goals, and they haven’t been doing the tasks they know they need to do, one of the biggest excuses I hear people say – or sometimes not say – is, “I don’t feel like doing it.” Granted, we all have days where we don’t feel like doing something. But motivation is not going to strike you like a lightning bolt from the sky. And I nor anyone else can give you the motivation you need. The answer, like the Nike commercial says, is: Just Do It! Once you start doing whatever it is, the motivation will come, making it easier for you to continue. One trick I recommend people do is, every morning before you begin your day, say, out loud, 50 times: “Just Do It! Just Do It! Just Do It!” etc. That should give you the motivation you need to get up and at it.

Remember: You can’t reach your potential unless you make it a priority.

To your success!
